Village pub deep in the Devon countryside wins top award at the Restaurant Show
The Millbrook Inn at South Pool in South Devon scooped the top prize at last week’s Restaurant Show held at Earls Court, London where chef Jean-Philippe Bidart and his team won the prestigious Gastropub Challenge.
The competition tests the skills of both the kitchen and front of house with four hours given to prepare a three-course meal for eight served with the appropriate wine.
It is judged by an esteemed panel of experts, including Nick Vadis of the craft guild of chefs, Nick Scade and Paul Breach of the Academy of Food and Wine.
Michelin Star Chef and judge Tom Kerridge commented that the team "demonstrated high standards and smart presentation". He added: “They used first class ingredients, and although the dishes were quite classic they contained flair.”
Five top Gastro Pubs were invited from around the country to compete in this prestigious event. Two panels of judges – back and front of house – ranked the food and service of each team and the overall winner was the one with the highest combination of points.
Ian Dent, who runs the pub with his wife Diana Hunt, said: “It was an incredible experience. We have developed the Millbrook to be a community pub with exceptional food and it has been judged as the very best you can get. We are very proud of all our team who went.
“It’s not just about Jean-Philippe but about the whole team working together to produce food of an exceptional quality. J-P (Jean-Philippe) really excelled himself. It’s the best I’ve ever seen him cook and our sous chef Gareth Darvell and commis chef Georgia Johnson were exceptional.”
Ian and Diana took over the pub four years ago and since then have established it as one of the top eating destinations in the South Hams while ensuring it has become the hub of the local community.
Most recently they have added The Veg Shed to the premises, a shop no bigger than a small wardrobe that is constantly open and relies on an honesty box for those who purchase locally produced fruit, vet, eggs, sausages and bacon.
“It’s our way of bringing a local shop back for the community. It’s totally non-profit making but it enables locals to sell their surplus fruit and veg. "Our nearest shop is almost three miles away", said Ian. While the pub is the focal point for the community, its food is also putting the South Hams on the far wider culinary map. Its latest award will ensure people continue to travel from far and wide to taste J-P’s classic dishes while enjoying the spirit of a warming local community.
The Millbrook Inn served an Assiette of Start Bay Crab as a starter with Bisque, Potted White Meat and Crab Claw Salad with puff pastry matchsticks. The main course was Credition Duck with Breast, Confit Leg and Liver, Fondant Potato, Foraged Ceps, Savoy Cabbage and Griotine Sauce. Dessert was a Chocolate Pot, served with Caramelised Plum and Blackberries Flambéed in Grand Marnier, Devon Clotted Cream and Chopped Mint.

COMBE HOUSE WINS GOLD DEVON HOTEL OF THE YEAR AWARD
Combe House Devon, near Exeter has won the 2010 Devon Hotel of the Year category at the Devon Tourism Awards, which were presented on Thursday, 30th September at a glittering ceremony at the Thurlestone Hotel, South Devon.
As the gold winner, Combe House has been automatically fast-tracked into the South West Tourism Excellence Awards in November, and then possibly on to the national Enjoy England awards in spring 2011.
Combe House Devon is a wildly romantic Grade I Elizabethan manor hidden on a 3,500 acre wooded estate in the thatched village of Gittisham. The stunning country hotel and restaurant has been run privately by Ruth and Ken Hunt for the past twelve years. During this time, the Hunts and their team have transformed the house and its gardens into a truly memorable place to stay.
Thrilled with the award proprietor Ken Hunt said: “This unexpected honour for our small, country house hotel reflects back on our wonderful, welcoming, happy and hard working team. We are fortunate to be in a stunning location with a wealth of the West Country’s quality food producers on our doorstep”, concludes Ken.
Combe’s two resident Master Chefs of Great Britain, Hadleigh Barrett and Stuart Brown, are ardent about sourcing the freshest and best quality local ingredients. Around 70% of the fruit and vegetables in season is also provided by Combe’s own kitchen gardens – the chefs talk food metres, not miles.
